It is mistaken to think of documentation as an element of the quality system. Documentation is the quality system (just as the paint is not an element of a painting - in a literal sense, it is the painting). A quality system is only as good as the documentation that implements it.

Good documentation is not somehow separate from your mainstream activities, isolated in your quality system; it is the fabric of your day-to-day activities: it is how you implement continual improvement.
